Planned Parenthood of Golden Gate (PPGG) recently launched a campaign in hopes of educating the Bay Area's youth
on sex and safety.
“Our goal at Planned Parenthood is to reach as many teens and young
adults as possible with our safe is sexy message,” said Diane
Harrison, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate. “We
encourage everyone, including elected officials, to support access to
family planning and comprehensive, medically accurate sexuality
education in order to reduce the need for abortion. Prevention is
what this campaign is all about.”
The commercial depicts a female in a hardhat using a drill and other
tools as she tells the audience,"My father always told me to use the
right tool for the right job." The advertisement then quickly exits the
seemingly innocent scene and shows the woman diving into bed. The ad closes with a shot of the "safe sex" toolbox
and the same female voice-over saying, "Nice tool!"
"The ad is beyond disgusting," said Jim Sedlak, executive director of
American Life League's STOPP International. "The entire scenario is
wrought with sexual innuendo regarding the connection between power
tools and sexual performance. It completely objectifies the sexual
act. Perhaps most offensive is the clear inference that the young
lady's father approves of her sexual escapades."
According to Planned Parenthood's latest annual report, the non-profit brought in
more than $265 million in federal, state and local tax funding in the
last fiscal year.
"All taxpayer funding of the group should be yanked immediately,"
said Sedlak.
PPGG states that they encourage everyone, including elected officials, to support
access to family planning and sexuality education in order to reduce the need for abortions.
The commercial, "Safe is Sexy", was first aired on MTV on the 15th of
April. Others advertising spots include KMEL radio and MySpace.com.
The KMEL radio spot has a conversation between two girl friends
shopping at a hardware store. One friend tells the other that her
boyfriend is visiting Planned Parenthood to get his "tool"
professionally checked. She expresses the desire to raise a family,
but not until she's ready.
