AnaiRhoads.org - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first blood test for Anthrax Monday.
Immunetics Inc., a diagnostics technology firm located in Boston, began researching Anthrax in 2001 at the request of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The company has managed to emerged with a blood test to detect both cutaneous (through a cut in the skin or ingested) and inhaled contamination of the bacteria in the bloodstream.
If caught early, the survival rate of those who have come into contact with Anthrax significantly increases. Antibiotics are given for a period of time to kill the bacteria. Unfortunately, those who have inhaled the powder-form of Anthrax are less likely to survive. The spores quickly attack the lining of the lungs, leaving the person with an inability to breathe.
